Confessional Guide

This is a simple pattern to follow with a Christian brother or sister to facilitate both confession and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. While it may seem structured, it is a guide, not a rigid rule.

On Confession (one or a few of these quotes are good ways to frame your time together off the start)

  • St. John Chrysostom (4th century)

“The medicine of confession is given us, that we may heal the wounds we have received after Baptism.”

  • Richard Foster, Celebration of Discipline

“Confession is a grace that brings a refreshing release. When we confess to a brother or sister we are set free to walk in newness of life.”

  • Dallas Willard, Renovation of the Heart

“To confess is to open the soul to the light of God and of others, so that grace can do its healing work.”

  • Henri Nouwen, Life of the Beloved

“The invitation is to let the darkness of our hearts be known, and to discover there is no place where the love of God cannot reach us.”

  • James Bryan Smith, The Good and Beautiful Community

“When we confess to one another, we do not wallow in sin; we celebrate grace that is already ours in Christ.”

The practice moves through four movements:

1. Reflect on the Nature of God

2. Invite God to Search Your Heart and Life

3. Confess, Receive Forgiveness, Pray for Healing

4. Celebrate Signs of God’s Work in Your Life

Movement 1: Reflect on the Nature of God (2 Steps)

Begin by focusing on God’s character, His kindness leads us to repentance.

Step 1 – Read Scripture

Choose a passage that reveals God’s love and mercy.

Examples:

  • Exodus 34:6–7.  “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.”

  • Psalm 86:5, 15.  “You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you… But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and Faithfulness.”

Step 2 – Silent Reflection

Hold 1–2 minutes of silence, rehearsing these words in your heart. Allow the Spirit to replace false ideas about God with the truth of His goodness and love.

Movement 2: Invite God to Search Your Heart and Life (2 Steps)

Prepare for confession by asking the Holy Spirit to reveal anything out of step with His way.

Step 1 – Read Scripture

Psalm 139:23–24 (NIV)

“Search me, God, and know my heart;

test me and know my anxious thoughts.

See if there is any offensive way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Step 2 – Wait in Silence

Hold 1–3 minutes of prayerful listening. Consider making brief notes of what the Spirit brings to

Mind.

Movement 3: Confess, Receive Forgiveness, Pray for Healing (5 Steps)

*Repeat Steps 2–4 for each participant.

  • Step 1 - Invitation to Confess

Read this verse above as a call to confession.

James 5:16 (NIV): “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”

  • Step 2 - Confession

Share honestly what the Spirit revealed—actions, beliefs, or patterns of thought that are out of sync with the way of Jesus.

  • Step 3 -  Pronouncement of Forgiveness

The listening partner responds – not necessarily these exact words but these ideas:

“Thank you for your confession. I receive it as your brother/sister in Christ. God has heard your confession, and because of the finished work of Jesus and the promises of Scripture, you have the assurance that God forgives you and is healing you. You are forgiven brother/ Sister.

  • Step 4 - Prayer

Pray for your partner, asking that God’s love fill every place of sin and bring deep healing.

  • Step 5 - Read a Scripture of Assurance

Choose one of these passages:

  • Isaiah 1:18 (NIV)

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow…”

  • Psalm 103:11–12

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”

  • Micah 7:18–19

“You will again have compassion on us; you will… hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”

  • Romans 8:1

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

  • 1 John 1:9 (NIV)

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Read Psalm 32

Movement 4: Celebrate God’s Work

Conclude by recognizing God’s grace already at work.

Step 1 - Reflect

Hold a brief silence, asking God to show where He is shaping Christlikeness in you.

Step 2 - Share

Each participant names specific ways they have seen God’s transforming work—whether resisting

anger, sensing deeper peace, or other signs of growth.

Step 3 - Pray

Thank God for His generous work and invite Him to continue His good purposes in the coming days.
