Job Description

The Communications Manager will play a key role in how our church communicates, tells stories, and engages both our congregation and surrounding community. This role blends content creation, writing, project management, and volunteer team development, ensuring external communications are clear, compelling, and aligned with our mission.

A significant part of this role involves creating and overseeing content across platforms (written, photo, and video) while supporting communications strategy and execution across ministries and major initiatives. This role also leads volunteer teams of writers, editors, and marketers to expand our creative capacity.

The Communications Manager will steward our core communication channels (social, email, web), actively contribute to storytelling through hands-on content creation, and ensure all communications reflect the voice and values of The Way Church, working closely with ministry leaders to shape and communicate what God is doing across the life of the church.

This role works closely with the broader creative team:

  • The Creative Director (strategy, direction)

  • The Photo & Video Content Producer (visual content, volunteers)

  • The Graphic Designer & Media Coordinator (design execution)

In all they do, the Communications Manager will work towards:

  1. Telling the story of what God is doing in & through The Way Church

  2. Contributing to the discipleship & formation of our church across digital channels

  3. Inviting people into the life of the church through clear, accessible communication

Details

Employment Type: Full-time (40 hrs/week)

Location: The Way Ministry Centre (101-1155 Thurlow St, Vancouver, BC) & sites

Salary: $50,000

Responsibilities

1. Communications & Project Management

  • Support the Creative Director in executing communications strategy across ministries, campaigns, and seasons

  • Partner closely with ministry leaders to clarify messaging, shape communication plans, and support ministry initiatives

  • Oversee communications project management across campaigns, events, and ministry initiatives

  • Manage timelines, deliverables, and approvals for major campaigns, Sunday gatherings, ministries, and special projects

  • Coordinate in-service communications, including scheduling announcement rotations, defining CTAs, and aligning messaging with ministry priorities

  • Collaborate with the creative team to execute projects, ensuring alignment between strategy, content, and design

  • Help shape clear communication pathways for newcomers and broader community engagement

2. Writing & Content Creation

  • Create and oversee written, photo, and video content across all communication channels

  • Write and edit content including emails, social captions, website copy, and campaign messaging

  • Work with ministry leaders to identify stories, initiatives, and key moments to communicate across channels

  • Collaborate with the Photo & Video Content Producer to plan and deploy visual storytelling (sermon clips, testimonies, recaps)

  • Maintain a consistent voice and tone across all communications

  • Support brand consistency across digital, print, and in-person environments

3. Systems Ownership & Workflow

  • Oversee and improve communications systems and workflows (project intake, scoping, prioritization, scheduling)

  • Manage tools such as Asana and other collaboration platforms

  • Serve as the primary intake for communications requests from ministry leaders, shaping scope, timelines, and priorities

4. Volunteer Team Development

  • Recruit, develop, and lead volunteer teams of writers, editors, marketers, and content creators

  • Build clear roles, expectations, and rhythms for volunteer teams

  • Foster a healthy, creative, and mission-driven culture

  • Support photo and video teams by aligning content needs and storytelling direction (not direct management)

5. Channels & Content Management

  • Social Media

    • Manage and grow social platforms (Instagram, Facebook, etc)

    • Develop and execute content strategies

    • Create and adapt content (sermon clips, graphics, storytelling)

  • Email

    • Write and oversee weekly newsletter and key communication rhythms

    • Coordinate pastoral communications and major campaigns

    • Collaborate with ministry leaders on ministry-specific communications

  • Website

    • Write, maintain, and update website content

    • Collaborate on new pages and user experience

    • Manage events, registrations, and key landing pages

6. Contact & Communications Triage

  • Oversee primary communication touchpoints (contact@thewaychurch.caemail inbox, DMs,phone)

  • Ensure timely, clear, and pastoral responses

  • Triage inquiries to appropriate staff and ministries

  • Build systems for tracking and follow-up

7. The Way College & Everyday Seminary

  • Lead digital recruitment and marketing efforts for The Way College

  • Oversee communications for Everyday Seminary

  • Represent the creative team to The Way College team

  • Collaborate with ministry leaders to communicate impact, formation, and community

Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in communications, marketing, or content (church/non-profit preferred)

  • Strong writing and editing skills across email, web, and social

  • Strong project management and organizational skills

  • Experience creating and executing content across multiple channels

  • Ability to lead teams and cultivate healthy volunteer culture

  • Proficiency in social, email, and web platforms

  • Familiarity with design tools (Adobe, Figma, Canva, etc.)

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines

  • Alignment with The Way Church’s mission and values

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required
