Advent is not about how good we are.

Advent is about how good Jesus is to include us in his family.

Jesus’ family lineage, as laid out in the beginning of the gospel of Matthew, included the notable and the scandalous.

Matthew highlights the non-Jewish, the sinner, the marginalized.

Jesus’ family is a mess.

His family is dysfunctional.

His family shares much of the brokenness we find in our own families.

Jesus came from a broken lineage to heal and restore broken lives.

The Addicted.

The Adulterer.

The Outcast.

The Pretender.

The Perfectionist.

The Wildly Successful.

The One who Never Feels Good Enough.

The Lonely, The Lost, The Hopeful Neurotic.

You’re Invited.

It is not about how good we are, it is about how loved we are.

Even the broken can belong in Jesus’ family through repentance and faith.

Matthew’s genealogy includes the outcast, scandalous and foreigner. The family Jesus comes from anticipates the family he has come for.
